Weekend Scout Camp – July 2016

Twelve of our Scouts (and three young leaders) took part in a weekend camp (Friday – Sunday) at the Spitewinter campsite this weekend. The rain held off on Friday night as they setup camp, but it was wet, windy and a bit chilly later on, though this didn’t prevent the wide game or dampen spirits.

Saturday morning was sunny and bright as the two patrols (and young leaders) cooked their breakfasts. Scouts were then divided into two groups and learned how to use hand axes safely, and how to build a shelter (which they needed as we had showers from mid-day onwards). The young leaders then got the main camp fire going. After lunch Scouts attempted both fire lighting (in the rain) and backwoods cooking (baked potatoes, steamed haddock, and a fried egg cooked in a frying pan made from a stick and some tin foil). The day was finished off with no-chicken korma, rice and hot dogs, and entertainment around the camp fire which had been stoked all day by the young leaders!

To our great relief, we had sunshine all day Sunday which allowed us all to dry out and pack all the tents away dry. Just before leaving camp, a number of the youngest Scouts were invested.

All of the leaders/helpers were impressed by the positive attitude and perseverance of all our Scouts (many of which have only just moved up from Cubs) over the weekend, despite the trying weather. Our more experienced Scouts handled the responsibility of looking after the younger ones with ease and the three young leaders proved themselves to be a real asset to the group, throughout the camp.

A big thank you to all the leaders, young leaders and parent helpers for giving up their weekend, and for all the support received from parents who helped to transport kit to and from the campsite.

Caving – December 2016

All the Scouts that went on the caving activity in Matlock really enjoyed the morning. A really big thank you to the caving team that looked after us all on the day.

Autumn Walk – November 2016

Our Autumn walk was enjoyed by the four Scouts that attended! The day started in drizzle, walking up the path/stream next to Peveril Castle. The rain stopped mid morning and held off for the rest of the day as we made our way round across the top of Mam Tor and back down to Castleton, at which point the sun even made an appearance. A big thank you to Mark who organised the route and got our Scouts involved in the map reading.

Scout Expedition

Scout Expedition

Five members of the Scout Troop completed their Expedition Hike over the weekend. The Scouts set off just after 10am on Saturday, towards their overnight camping stop at Tansley Wood Scout Centre. They arrived here mid afternoon having walked approximately 7 miles. It was quite wet and windy overnight, but the camp site was quite sheltered. They set off again on Sunday morning at 10am and after a very long day, arrived at Holymoorside at 5pm. The going was quite tough over the two days due to the terrain, the equipment they carried with them, and because some of the footpaths were difficult to find and very overgrown.

A huge thank you all the Scout leaders who supported the planning and execution of the Hike, and particularly to Ryan for meeting our Scouts at the checkpoints and keeping an eye on their progress over the two days.

Scout Summer Camp 2017

February 29, 2020 By scoutsrule Leave a Comment

Scout Summer Camp – July 2017

The Scout troop held their week long annual summer camp at Raven Gill Scout Campsite, located just outside Commondale in the North Yorkshire moors. 12 Scouts, 2 Explorer Scouts/Young Leaders and their leaders had an action packed week, made new friends and enjoyed canoeing, sailing (Scaling Dam), swimming, mountain biking, wide games, rock climbing, hiking and crab fishing. As well as all the the activities, the Scouts kept an orderly camp site and cooked for themselves. As always, a huge thank you to all the leaders in all their capacities that made this camp possible.

Abseiling – November 2017

Lots of our Scouts took part in abseiling off the bridge at Millers Dale on the Monsal Trail at the weekend. Well done to all those that conquered their fear of heights – and well done to those fearless Scouts who made it look so easy. A huge thank you to the climbing team instructors Adam, John and others that helped out, which made this activity possible. There will be more photo’s of this activity soon.

Bear Grylls Challenge – October 2017

Our Scouts completed their Bear Grylls challenge, enduring high winds and rain for most of the weekend. Luckily they were quite sheltered in the wooded area, and their survival shelters were top notch. A big thank you to all the leaders and helpers that made this experience possible. Fishing At Holymoorside Dam – June 2017

The Scouts went fishing this Friday at Holymoorside Dam with members of the Holymoorside Angling Club. They caught a lot of fish over the evening, most of which made it into the holding net (though some did get away). Everyone enjoyed the summer evening, and a really big thank you to all the members of the angling club that looked after our Scouts and taught them about the different baits and techniques best suited to catch the different types of fish found in the pond.  The biggest catches of the night were the tench.

Back To Basics Day – May 2017

Scouts took part in a back-to-basics day held at the local Spitewinter campsite. They all enjoyed the knife and hand axe, fire lighting, and preparing and cooking (and eating) a pheasant activities. A big thanks to Alan who taught our Scouts about the different parts of a pheasant and how to prepare the bird ready for cooking. All the leaders commented on how engrossed our Scouts were on this particular activity! Scouts also took part in a promotional photo to say thank you to Buildbase for the donation of a wood store to the Spitewinter campsite (to keep the campfire wood dry all year round).

Cooking – March 2017

This evening the Scout section were cooking. Their task was to make both Sweet & Sour pork and Tomato Soup – and the results were pretty good. A big thank you to all the leaders, young leaders, and the many parents who supported the evening.

Cycling – March 2017

It started to rain shortly after setting off, and continued to rain until we got back – it turned out to be a very wet cycle ride, a 12.3 mile route around the Derwent reservoirs. A big thanks to Ryan and Ben and the parent helpers that came along.

cavingCaving – March 2018

Scouts took part in exploring the caves on the south side of Matlock Bath (near the Bath Hotel).  Once again, a big thanks to the caving team who all helped make this such a great activity.

Indoor Camp & Conservation Weekend – February 2018

The Scouts enjoyed a full weekend of ‘indoor’ camping at the Peak District National Park’s Brunts Barn facility.  The weekend also included some conservation activities i.e. helping to clear an area of dead wood.  This meant chopping, cutting and burning things!  A big thanks to all the leaders and helpers that made the weekend possible.

Chief Scouts Award – February 2018

Four of our Scouts were presented with their Chief Scouts Gold award at the District’s awards afternoon held at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield.  140 Scouts from all over the county were presented with their certificates by David Coleman Vice President of the Derbyshire Scouts Association.  More photos can be seen here.
